It was time to press on and get closer to our destination. Instead of taking a direct route to Plattsburg, we took a little scenic detour and visited Fort Ticonderoga. This fort offers tours and some great lessons in history. The views of Lake Champlain afforded French, British and American troops (at different times!) a wide view of ships coming up from the south. I was slightly disappointed to learn that the fort was almost entirely rebuilt. I might have preferred to see the actual ruins where George Washington walked!

After our side trip, we drove north along the scenic route to AuSable Chasm Campground. We knew there would be a chasm of some sort to tour, but had no idea it would be completely AMAZING. Both of us hollered “Holy Shit!” as we drove Route 9 across the river and saw the falls. We quickly set up camp and went right back to snap a few photos.

Can you see why we hollered when we first saw this view?!
