Summit Lake State Park is a real hidden gem. In fact, we had never heard of it, in spite of its proximity to Indianapolis. We drove to the park in a convoy of Jeep, boat, Steely Van, and June Bug in under 45 minutes!
We chose our sites online without ever seeing the park, and we chose VERY WELL.
They both back onto the lake, with short paths for water access. Frank loaded up the Lund boat (our late dad’s pride and joy) and is able to keep it tied up down at the water.
We had no luck catching any fish, but we spent quite a bit of time out on the lake. It’s a no-wake body of water, created from an old quarry, and it’s clear and still. Lovely!
Vera came along for this trip. She was able to swim until she was completely tired out, and she doesn’t emerge from the water covered in “yuck”!
Frank and Becky are the official cooks on these group camp-outs. Brother Yale and his wife Carol came for a visit the first night and joined us for foil dinners. We timed them out perfectly, at exactly 35 minutes, and they were delicious.
Although the weather was HOT and HUMID, we slept in air conditioning thanks to our Airstreams. This is the best way to camp in the summer! And we woke up every morning to a water view, making a peaceful setting for sipping coffee.
Summit Lake will be our new go-to location for a quick and easy camping spot close to home. We can’t wait to plan another trip.
Great pictures, Becky! We enjoyed our campsite there at Summit Lake as well. It was really great to meet all of you. Happy camping!

Hey Becky, This Captain Dave from Huntington Indiana. My wife and I have loved Summit for years. The lake side sites can not be beat and the campground and lake are fantastic. Love that there is a speed limit. We are also 1 year from retirement. If you want to catch huge blue gills, bass, perch your invited to come to our 2 acre pond/6 acre farm and camp. Very secluded and you could bring your friends. Signed – long time fan of Bob. Gaurantee a great confidential campout. Just reply
Thanks for the invite, but we have our own pond here at home with blue gill, etc.
Happy fishing to you!
I live 5 minutes away from Summit and do a lot of Triathlon in the area. It is beautiful place to live in the country.
I agree. We wouldn’t live anywhere else but the midwest!! Happy Trails to you, and thanks a ton for checking out my little blog.
Thank you for the review of Summit Lake… now when I tell my husband we should go there, I can say it has your stamp of approval!! Enjoy retirement.
